Mahjong Solitaire

NextReport

Mahjong solitaire is a tile-matching game. The board is a stack of tiles, and you clear it by removing two tiles that show the same face. This layout is built in lines: a pair you take opens the tiles that were sitting beside it.

How to play

A tile is free only when two things are true. Nothing is stacked on top of it, and at least one of its long sides has no neighbor. A tile blocked on the left and the right stays put, even if you can see its face.

Select two free tiles with the same face. Flowers match other flowers, dragons match the same dragon, and a season matches another season. A bamboo 7 does not match a character 7.

The layout is clear when no tiles remain. If two matching tiles are both buried, no later pair will reach them until you remove whatever is covering them or standing on both sides.

What to watch

  • Take the pair that uncovers a tile, not the pair that only sits on the edge. An edge match that opens nothing leaves the center stuck.
  • Look for the last copy of a face before you spend the pair that was keeping a side open. Two identical tiles on opposite ends of a line can be the only way into the row between them.
  • If a tile is free on the right, the left neighbor is not required. One open side is enough.

Games like Mahjong Solitaire

  • Hidden Pairs Mahjong is mahjong solitaire on a different stack. The free-tile rule is the same: uncovered, and open on one side.
  • Mahjong Bird Tiles uses bird faces on the same pair-and-clear puzzle, so a match is still two identical free tiles.
  • Travel Mahjong Deluxe is another mahjong solitaire layout. Clearing one board does not change how a tile becomes free on the next.

FAQ

What is mahjong solitaire?

A single-player tile puzzle. You remove pairs of the same face until the layout is empty. You do not score a hand or play against a seat.

When is a tile free?

When no tile covers it and at least one long side is open. A tile walled in on both sides cannot be taken.

Do the lines change the match?

No. Lines are the shape of this layout. The match is still two identical free tiles.

Is Mahjong solitaire free here?

Yes. The board opens in the browser. There is no download and no account.
