Spider Solitaire uses two decks, 104 cards, dealt into ten columns. You build down by rank, regardless of suit, but a run only leaves the table when it is one suit from King down to Ace. Eight of those runs clear the deal. These are the classic rules.
How to play
Move a face-up card onto a card of the next higher rank. A 7 can sit on an 8. The suit does not have to match for that move. A face-up sequence moves together only when every card in it is the same suit.
An empty column accepts any card or any same-suit run. There is no foundation pile. A finished King-to-Ace run of one suit is taken off the table.
When no move is left, deal the stock. It lays one card on every column that still has cards. Ten cards leave the stock on a full deal, so you need ten occupied columns before you deal.
Choose your suit count
One suit is the same layout with every card in a single suit. Same-suit runs are common, so it is the teaching table. Most people start on spider solitaire 2 suits: the same ten columns and the same stock, with only two suits, so a same-suit run shows up sooner.
The long game is spider solitaire 4 suits. Both full decks are in play, a build can still mix suits, and a run leaves the table only when all thirteen cards share a suit.
What to watch
- Prefer a same-suit build even when a mixed build is legal. Only the same-suit run can move as a group, and only that run can leave the table.
- Do not deal the stock while a column is empty unless you have no other move. The deal needs a card on every column.
- Turn face-down cards early. A hidden King blocks the column under it, and the stock will bury that column further.
